About MICA

Muscovite mica is a mineral that’s made of aluminum and potassium, and is the most common type of mica.  It’s also known as white mica, isinglass, or potash mica.

Properties
  • Cleavage

Muscovite mica has a perfect basal cleavage, which means it can be split into very thin, flexible sheets.

  • Color

Muscovite mica is light in color, and its sheets are transparent to translucent.

  • Thermal resistance

Muscovite mica has a high thermal resistance, making it a good thermal insulator.

  • Dielectric strength

Muscovite mica has a high dielectric strength, making it a good dielectric insulator.

  • Chemical inertness

Muscovite mica is chemically inert, lightweight, and resilient.

Uses
  • Windowpanes

In Russia, muscovite mica was used to make windowpanes, which became known as Muscovy glass.

  • Insulation

Muscovite mica is used in industrial insulation, such as lining furnaces and automotive batteries.

  • Biomaterials

Muscovite mica is used to immobilize biological species, such as DNA, protein arrays, and lipid films.

Formation

  • Muscovite mica is found in metamorphic rocks, such as gneisses and schists.
  • It can also be found in granites, fine-grained sediments, and some highly siliceous rocks.
